EFT – Tapping
EFT or “Emotional Freedom Techniques,” also called “Tapping,” offers a unique somatic approach to emotional healing grounded in the understanding that our emotions and physical sensations are interconnected, and by addressing one, we can influence the other. EFT is known for its ability to help individuals release emotional blockages, which are often the root cause of various psychological and physical ailments.
EFT is a powerfully effective method that can be taught as a self-help modality and/or used with a Practitioner for more complex concerns. The efficacy of EFT lies in its capacity to quickly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress, reducing the symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and even phobias. It can be adapted to any individual’s needs and can be used to enhance personal performance, improve relationships, and promote mental and physical health.
HOW EFT WORKS
It is a therapeutic method that draws from the wisdom of acupuncture but uses no needles. Instead, it involves a gentle tapping process using the fingertips, particularly three fingers, to rhythmically press the body’s meridian points, primarily on the hands and face.
These points are strategic junctures in the body’s energy system, pathways through which life force flows and circulates. Tapping on these meridians while focusing on emotional or physical discomfort releases energy blockages that contribute to distress.
The technique of EFT Tapping is a form of biofeedback to the body’s energy system. While tapping on these meridian points, people focus on the emotional or physical issues at hand, verbalizing their feelings. This personalized approach is crucial as it tailors the tapping to the individual’s emotional needs. The impact of EFT on the brain is profound. Science shows us that tapping while concentrating on a specific issue can modify how the brain processes emotional information.
This is due to Tapping’s ability to send signals to the part of the brain involved in regulating emotions and the fight-or-flight response. By doing so, EFT helps recalibrate the brain’s response to stress, leading to a reduction in anxiety and an increase in emotional calmness.
The client’s own words and affirmations, used during the tapping sequence, reinforce the positive effects on the brain’s neuropathways and alter the brain’s habitual reactions to stress, leading to reduced anxiety and a heightened state of calm.
EFT Tapping empowers individuals to take an active role in their own healing process, utilizing the body’s innate energy mechanisms to initiate positive change.
By acknowledging the complex interplay between mind and body, EFT offers a path to balance and harmony, setting the stage for transformative healing and growth.
EFT’s Impact on Stress Reduction
EFT has been shown to influence stress reduction by reducing the emotional impact of memories that trigger emotional distress and dysregulation, lowering cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone, which can decrease by as much as 43 percent following EFT sessions. This significant reduction in cortisol can lead to a cascade of positive effects on the body, including a decrease in stress-related symptoms. Additionally, EFT can increase levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation and helps to counteract feelings of anxiety and has been shown to influence the effects of genetic expression that control immune factors and regulate inflammation in the body.
The process of EFT also involves identifying and addressing negative emotions, which are often at the root of stress.
This therapeutic approach not only provides immediate relief from acute stress but also contributes to long-term stress management success.

The Science of EFT
The Science of Tapping is short documentary film dedicated to demystifying tapping and increasing acceptance of this powerful tool.
I invite you to watch the trailer.
Dr. Peta Stapelton is a world-leading researcher in Emotional Freedom Techniques (‘Tapping’) and has been awarded many achievements including the 2014 Harvey Baker Research Award for meticulous research (Association of Comprehensive Energy Psychology, USA). In 2019 Peta was also named Psychologist of the Year (by the Australian Allied Health Awards). In her book, “The Science Behind Tapping,” she presents the clinical research and evidence behind Emotional Freedom Techniques in an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand manner.

What experts say about EFT
“I don’t think I could do the practice I do anymore if I couldn’t tap anymore. Tapping is a very important part of my world because it helps people to stay within the window of tolerance. Of course, the big thing is people either go to the roof and become hyper or they shut down and become hypo. Tapping is one very nice way to get people to even keel. So I teach everybody who comes to see me who has a serious trauma history, we start by tapping…” – Bessel Van der Kolk (trauma expert)
“EFT is the single most effective tool I’ve learned in 40 years of being a therapist.” – Dr. Curtis A. Steele (psychiatrist)
“At our clinic we are presently using EFT to help patients overcome negative emotions that undermine health and to eliminate many forms of pain. We also use it to reduce food cravings that can sabotage healthy eating programs, and to implement positive life goals to support optimal health and well-being… Of the thousands we have studied and used in 20 years of practicing medicine, EFT is the greatest healing technique that exists. EFT is now a major component of our treatment program.” – Dr. Joseph Mercola, Director, Natural Health Center, Chicago, Illinois
“In my 50 years as a practicing psychiatrist, EFT has proven to be one of the most rapid and effective techniques I’ve ever used.” – Henry Altenberg, MD
“Some day the medical profession will wake up and realize that unresolved emotional issues are the main cause of 85% of all illnesses. When they do, EFT will be one of their primary healing tools… as it is for me.” – Eric Robins, MD
“I’ve used Tapping for years and highly recommend it!” – Joe Vitale, Bestselling author and one of the stars of the hit movie The Secret
“EFT is destined to be the top healing tool for the 21st century.” – Cheryl Richardson, Author of Stand Up for Your Life, Take Time for Your Life and Life Makeovers – (expert personal coach and lecturer)
“EFT offers great healing benefits.“ Deepak Chopra, Bestselling author of more than fifty books and co-creator of the Chopra Center
“What’s interesting about EFT is that it is a process that really, in some sense engages… like super learning and super learning is like pushing the record button on the subconscious mind.” – Bruce Lipton, Author of The Biology of Belief (international expert bridging science and spirit)
